Description
I was out photographing nature's creatures where I heard the characteristic hawk chatter right over my head. I just about fell over when I saw it so close--perhaps 200 feet from me. For once I was lucky enough to have the camera in hand exactly with the telephoto lens and at the right settings by accident to capture several photos of this magnificent bird.
...................................................................................................................
The color of the sky was actually plain blue and not very inviting so this picture is a combination of many photographs creating a collage of sort that retains the true colors both in the sky and also in the bird. Where I live, in Orange County on Southern California, USA, these birds are very frequent but one can rarely see them right over one's yard in such close proximity.
.....................................................................................................
My yard is small but I have created a bird sanctuary which then of course invite hawks and all other predators. In fact I have at one point witnessed a hawk grabbing a bird right under my watch as I was watering the yard and several little gray tits decided to take a drink. All it took but one second and one bird went missing... It was a sad scene bit then you look at the thief and you see this magnificent bird and cannot feel any hatred.

Stunning image, Angela. I understand your feelings as wrote in your description about seeing a predator at work. I, too, have had those kinds of experiences and have to remind myself that that is nature's way. You have created a splendid image. I like all the wonderful details in your hawk and the way that you handled the sky and sun. Beautiful. f/v
